Over ons
Our seafarers’ house, like many others around the world, is a “Home away from home.”
Stella Maris Ghent has existed for more than 50 years and belongs to the global network of the Apostleship of the Sea.
There are billiard tables, satellite television, free Wi-Fi and internet, a ping-pong table, a guitar and piano for music lovers, and of course, a tap installation with our famous Belgian beer and other beverages.
Stella Maris Ghent, a haven for seafarers for over fifty years
On December 6th, Saint Nicholas comes aboard with chocolate; during Christmas and New Year, we distribute gifts; and at Easter, we bring Easter eggs aboard. Especially the Christmas period is very emotional. Then, we try to compensate for the missing family with a small gift: “The gesture counts more than the content of the package,” a seaman often says.
The hats club knits caps with great enthusiasm for sailors in our cool climate.
We also collect second-hand men’s clothing. Although they travel internationally and are away from home for a long time, they are often not prepared for our chilly climate.
